Honda CR-Z Review - The Sporty Hybrid That Could
The Honda CR-Z (2010-2016) was Honda's attempt to combine sporty driving dynamics with hybrid efficiency, marketed as the spiritual successor to the beloved CR-X. This compact 2-seater coupe featured a 1.5L i-VTEC engine paired with Honda's IMA hybrid system, producing a combined 122 hp (later increased to 130 hp).
While its performance didn't match its sporty looks (0-100 km/h in about 9 seconds), the CR-Z offered engaging handling thanks to its short wheelbase and low center of gravity. The three-mode drive system (Econ, Normal, Sport) altered throttle response and steering weight, with Sport mode providing the most dynamic experience.
2013-2016 CR-Z Technical Specifications
- Engine: 1.5L SOHC i-VTEC + IMA hybrid
- Total System Power: 130 hp @ 6,000 rpm
- Torque: 190 Nm @ 1,000-1,500 rpm
- Transmission: 6-speed manual or CVT
- Fuel Economy: 5.9L/100km (manual)
- 0-100 km/h: 8.9 seconds (manual)
The CR-Z's futuristic interior featured a digital instrument panel with changing colors based on driving style. While practical storage space was limited, the hatchback design offered reasonable cargo capacity for a sports coupe. The manual transmission option (rare for a hybrid) helped appeal to driving enthusiasts.
Though criticized for not being sporty enough nor efficient enough to stand out in either category, the CR-Z developed a cult following. Its unique combination of hybrid technology and sporty styling makes it one of Honda's most interesting modern experiments. Today, the CR-Z is remembered as an ambitious, if flawed, attempt to merge performance and efficiency.
