Honda Prelude Review - The Sporty Coupe That Pioneered Honda Tech

The Honda Prelude, produced across five generations from 1978 to 2001, was Honda's sporty front-wheel-drive coupe that served as a technology showcase. As Honda's longest-running coupe nameplate, the Prelude introduced numerous innovations including the world's first mechanical 4-wheel steering system (4WS) in 1987.

Later generations featured Honda's revolutionary VTEC engines, with the fourth-gen (1991-1996) offering the acclaimed H22A powerplant producing up to 200 hp. The Prelude combined sports car styling with practical 2+2 seating, though rear space was cramped. Its low-slung profile and excellent weight distribution made it a favorite among driving enthusiasts.

      Fifth Generation (1996-2001) Technical Specifications

      • Engine: 2.2L H22A4 VTEC inline-4
      • Power: 200 hp @ 7,000 rpm
      • Torque: 212 Nm @ 5,250 rpm
      • Transmission: 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto
      • 0-100 km/h: 6.8 seconds (manual)
      • Top Speed: 225 km/h (limited)

The Prelude's handling was exceptional for a front-wheel-drive car, with precise steering and minimal torque steer. The optional 4WS system on third and fourth generations provided remarkable stability at high speeds and improved low-speed maneuverability. Inside, the cockpit-style dashboard wrapped around the driver, emphasizing its sporty character.

While never as raw as the S2000 or as tuner-friendly as the Civic, the Prelude carved its niche as a sophisticated sport coupe. Today, well-maintained examples, especially the manual VTEC models, are becoming collector's items. The Prelude's legacy lives on as one of Honda's most technologically advanced and driver-focused coupes.
